New AC!

It's been hot here, like everywhere else this summer and my old air conditioner wasn't working. I have cleaned and battled w/ it since spring. 5 stitches and a gob of money later, I now have a very cool work area. I've had studios in the past that had no ac and it's a workable situation, but it certainly slows me down. I even think slower in a 90+ degree work space. No excuses now ...except it is hard to paint detail w/ these wool mittens on ....

RIP Cy Twombly

For a long time I didn't get Twombly's paintings. I saw them in magazines and books and they looked sort of gimmicky and slightly phony. Then several years ago I was at the Chicago Art Institute walking around, I turned a corner and came face to face with 3 large paintings by Twombly. They blew me away. They were so alive. They were the most spontaneous, alive (I can't think of a better word) paintings I have ever seen. Amazing. I became ... a fan seems like too frivolous a word- I was awe struck and have remained so since.
I saw some bad western movie and in it Gene Hackman says " life is about loss". If that is true, then the loss of Twombly is life. I'm just glad he left so much of himself behind.
Rest in Peace Mr. Twombly.

Rehearsal in Mississippi

Mark and I hauled all of my furniture pieces to his house in Batesville on Saturday. We set up our new tents and tried to lay out all of our stuff to see if it would fit. It seemed ok. Not too much, not obviously to little. I think we are as ready as we can be for the festival next weekend. We'll see.

Another furniture thing. This one is a screen w/ pegs on front and back for hanging coats and bags and such.

Making Stuff

My cousin Mark and I have committed to making and selling furniture at the Cross Tie Festival in Cleveland MS next month. As w/ so many things that Mark and I have done over the long years, I can't really say how this happened. I'm sure the phrases "what the hell" and "why not?" were said. And I'm pretty sure it was his idea, but anyway we'll be there. "It could be fun".

I wish I had his drive. Amazing!

Inside and Out

More snow and a good reason to stay in the studio and paint warm landscapes.

Okay, Back to Work

After a long pause in art production, I think it is time to get back to it. I'm not sure why and I guess now that I think about it, I have never known "why". I guess because it's what I do. I am certainly happiest when I'm painting ... so I suppose it doesn't make a lot of sense not to paint ... and I'm getting tired of watching old movies.
